H-3 Crash Sends Car Under Garbage Truck

KAILUA, Hawaii -- Emergency crews said it is amazing no one was killed in a crash at the Kailua end of the H-3 Freeway on Friday afternoon.
It happened near the H-3's Kamehameha Highway on ramp, going toward Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe just after noon.
Witnesses said a 19-year-old Marine driving a BMW was racing with another carload of Marines when he lost control of the car and it lodged underneath this huge city garbage container truck.
The car's driver suffered some cuts to his nose and eyebrow. Paramedics treated him and took him to Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.
The garbage truck driver was not hurt. He told police he thought he had a flat tire at first, and then realized the car had crashed under his truck.
Police shut down the windward-bound lanes of the H-3 for about 45 minutes while they cleaned up the accident scene.
