VILLAGE PARK — The Medical Examiner's office has identified Juanito Omnes Jr., 14, of Kunia, as the boy who was killed in a one-car traffic crash in Village Park late last night.
Police are investigating whether the incident, which also sent two other teens and the 22-year-old driver to The Queen's Medical Center in serious and critical condition, involved racing.
The fatal single-car accident was reported at 10:31 p.m. on Anonui Street near the Puia intersection.
Police said the black 1995 Honda Prelude was traveling northeast on Anonui at a high rate of speed when it crossed the center line, struck a fire hydrant and utility pole.
Lt. Darren Izumo of HPD's Vehicular Homicide department said it's possible the car may have been racing another vehicle, a maroon Honda, at the time it crashed.
Police are asking for anyone with information about this vehicle or the accident to contact Crimestoppers or HPD's Vehicular Homicide Division.
The 14-year-old boy who was killed was the front-seat passenger. He is from the Kunia area and was pronounced dead at the scene, Emergency Service spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.
Two other teens, a 12-year-old boy from Waipahu and a 13-year-old boy who's residence is unknown at this time, were in the back seat.
The driver was a 22-year-old man from the Kunia area.
Both the driver and the boy who was killed were wearing seatbelts and their airbags deployed, police said, but neither teen in the back was wearing their seatbelt.
The 12-year-old passenger, who was sitting behind the driver's seat, was ejected from the vehicle when it hit the pole and is listed in serious condition at Queen's.
The driver and 13-year-old male are at Queen's and listed in critical condition.
It is not known at this time if alcohol was involved. Police said conditions were road conditions were rainy.
This is the 53rd traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 79 at the same time last year.
