H-2 lanes reopened after fatal motorcycle accident

The south-bound lanes of the H-2 Freeway just prior to the H-1 East merge was reopened at 4:30 a.m. following a fatal motorcycle accident early this morning.

The accident was reported shortly after 1 a.m.

Police said a 23-year-old man from the Schofield Barracks area was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle while speeding southbound on the H-2 Freeway toward the H-1 merge. He was not wearing a helmet.

Police said the man hit the guardrail just past the Wai'anae exit and continued sliding south along the rail before hitting a large rock, a light pole and then another guard rail. He was thrown from his motorcycle and came to rest on the shoulder west of that guardrail, suffering serious head, abdominal and leg injuries.

The motorcycle, a black 2005 Honda CBR 600, continued to skid southbound, coming to rest in the center lane.

The victim was transported to the Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at the center.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident, which occurred under clear skies and on a dry roadway.

The light pole the motorcycle hit was damaged in the accident and a Hawaiian Electric crew was called to deal with a live wire that was on the ground.

This is the 52nd traffic fatality on Oahu compared to 87 at the same time last year.
