I was referring to THE OTHER DHHL PARCEL!
I'm hearing from the other drag racers that you can hit some pretty decent speeds in 1/8 mile. ;)

I'd like to see the new proposed layout. I'm assuming the road course will be very nice with enough runoff to avoid massive damage on offroad excursions? I'd assume as a formula guy, you'll have a hand in the design. Can't wait!

1/8 mile? That would require a totally different setup to the car from 1/4 mile. The whole chassis would have to be setup differently... move weight around, relocate rear control arms to change the Instant Center, etc etc... would kinda be like taking a dirt circle track car and making chages for pavement.
But hey, that's cool. You won't see me protesting and lobying against your efforts just because my type of racing isn't supported at your facility. I wouldn't want to ruin racing for everyone else due to my own selfishness. I can adapt to the changing times and changing venues. 1/8 mile racing is still better than no racing.

Neither would I. That's why I wouldn't have sold the buy option for HRP to commercial developer Irongate (knowing full well they planned to build a business park there), like the former leaseholder did. Considering how many racers and fans enjoyed Hawaii Raceway Park, I can't think of too many people that would have been that selfish.
As far as SORT's temp track goes, all of the venues will be smaller. That is something dictated by the land area available. I think most racers would agree that a smaller track is better than no track. And we need a track NOW!
SORT is not giving up on HRP either, it's just going to take more time.

I certainly have my ideas on how it should be laid out, but the design has not been "officially" approved yet. SORT is open minded about the design, other racers should submit their own ideas. I will post up the parameters when I get them confirmed.

The success of "Arenacross" proves that you don't need a huge land area to setup a track. This type of track setup can be built on less than 1 acre of land. :D

SORT is committed to supporting all the former venues at HRP. We are still hopeful of breaking ground this month or early next month. Of course the dirt tracks will be finished first - that's just the nature of the beast. The drag strip will be the most difficult and costly venue to costruct, but planning and purchasing equipment is already underway.
The more racers that join up and help, the faster it will get done. :D

What would really be the problem with a 1/8 track anyway. Most guys say that their top speed doesn't go beyond that anyway. They just maintain it to the end of the 1/4 mile.
We need to have a drag racer post here with some facts!

Once we start breaking ground, we can get a better idea on how the layout would be. There is some existing asphalt there and we might possibly be able to work with that. If we started with a 1/8 mile track. This might fit into Phase I. We will basically work with the dirt venue (stock car, motorcross, mud bogs/sand drags) first, because the dirt is readily available now...and free... The other venues that require asphalt, will also be included in Phase I. It will just take a little more funding to get the materials to make it happen.... Don't worry, it's already in the making....

1/8 mile is exactly what it sounds like, half track. most of the cars that run under 15 seconds almost double their speed between 1/8, and 1/4. they are 2 different things. like telling you guys to run on asphalt. and we see how that went when it was brought up for the circle track..

SORT's new lot is only 40 acres. That's too small for 1/4 mile. That's why everyone that wants a full 1/4 mile should get behind the effort to save HRP. P9 is never gonna happen, and anyone with a brain knows it.

Lets look at it this way; my last drag car ran between 100-103 mph in the 1/8 but only 123-125 mph in the 1/4, it wasn't set up that way, it just happened that way. The majority of drag racing going on in Hawaii consist's of bracket racing (it does'nt matter how fast you run, it's how consistant). Yes, you would have to change certain things on your car to make it run the best it can in the 1/8 mile but thats up to the individual. Bracket racing in an 1/8 mile track probably wouldn't fly so we would probably have to have class racing brought back. Either way, we can go burn rubba all night long ( or day )!

The majority of drag racging on Oahu is "test n tune" or "street night". There were 7 or 8 street nights for every bracket race. The "street racers" kept the gates open. On an average street night there was 50-100% more cars than came out for Pro Gas. If 1/4 mile is what they want it'd be a good idea to give it to them or they may not show up. I hope that's not the case!
From a drag racer's perspective... My car went 116 in the 1/8 and 146 in the 1/4. The last half of the track was where all the excitement was. I can't tell you how many races would have ended up with different winners if we had shut off at the 1/8. Things are just getting good at that point. Imagine you only got 2 turns on the oval and the race was pau... not as much fun.
But still, some racing is better than no racing. If 1/8 mile is the only game in town then the "real racers" will come and be happy to have a place to play. Just gonna have to keep on pressuring the politicians so they know this is "temporary"! :D

Well, like I said, we won't really know the situation of the layout until we start clearing the lot. We may have problems with sink holes out there. Let's hope not.....
Our main goal is to have something for everyone. It may be 1/8 or 1/4, but either way, we would like to have something. If it starts out as 1/8, it doesn't mean that it cannot be extended to be 1/4 mile. The main objective is to provide Oahu's racers a place to race that's not on the streets.
We are just fortunate to be blessed with the kokua of DHHL.
Patience people...patience....we're working hard to get racing back....

Well chad, I have to admit, you're wrong. First of all, the rent collected from the circle track kept the gates open ( everything else went into the pockets ) Secondly, the reason why Pro Gas had such a small turnout was because of the " cars must be painted " rule and the manini payout and the main one; " if you dont like it, you can race someplace else "! These are the reasons why Pro Gas turned into Paul Gas. Thirdly, REAL drag racers build their own cars; how much you bought yours for ? You know what else, you come up with the stupidest scenarios. Even when we used to have Pro Gas meetings, you used to ask the most idiotic questions. But then again, this is probably why you're to only one from omac posting on this forum.

Here we go again... time to get hostile!
Well, you seem to know me... who are you again? I mean a real name, not a fake one to hide behind. I think you have me confused with someone else, though, because I rarely went to ProGas meetings. Were you on the Board of Directors? If not, then you got no room to bitch about the direction they went becase no one stepped up to help run it. I helped with the newsletter for years even though I didn't have time to race. If you didn't like the way it was run or the rules then you should have stepped up instead of crying about it online.
I think it's funny you want to talk about stupid scenarios when Pro Gas was lucky to get 80 cars a night and it was 10 times a year... a slow street night would have well over 125 cars and happened about 90 times a year (3 a week during the summer). You've abviously never talked to anyone who has run a track because they'd tell you the same thing "the street racers keep the gates open!" This was as true when Yalla said it as it was when Paul said it. There are WAY MORE street racers than Pro Gas racers... period. The Pro Gas racers are a more dedicated bunch... but can't compare in sheer numbers.
And rent from the circle track keeping the gates open... WOW! The circle track did't pay rent for 2 years. I'm not blaming the racers in any way because they paid their entry fee and left the rest up to the manager... I'm just saying you're clueless about how the track operated!
But you are right about 1 thing... I bought my car for about 1/3 - 1/4 what it would cost me to build it from scratch. Hell, I coudln't build the drivetrain for what I paid for the whole car. It was a good starting point and I've changed pretty much everything on it, including building the turbo system, intercooler and converting the EFI system.
But hey, knock yourself out and spend 3x more and do it yourself. And all those guys who bought chassis and whatnot from the mainland aren't real racers too I suppose. Tell me again who built your chassis... who did the machine work on your motor... who built your trans? Maybe if you had a car that was quicker than high 10s you'd understand a little more about what it takes to go fast.
<EDIT>
Man... after re-reading this I'm actually kind of sad now. All this hostility between guys that used to race and have fun together. :(

Chad, Im tired of arguing with you; you're right. No more hostility from me anymore, just the truth. Believe it or not, I really know how the track was ran and I know how it was done, but thats the past. And talking about real racers building their own cars, I was talking about the people that dont have alot of money to spend on a full chasis car or dragster (and to mention, someplace to keep it ). As for me, my car was basically a stock chassis, rollcage, 10 inch tire, Snyder's did the machine work, I did the assembly, normally aspirated, powerglide trans I built, unported steel heads, the car ran 10.50's-60's with a 1.40-1.43 60 ft. I was lucky is that I had less than 8k in the entire car. Alot of the parts were from old race cars that I've been collecting.

Agree to disagree and no hostilty... sounds like a winner to me :)
BTW, 10s for under 8 grand on a small tire is awesome, sounds like a fun ride.

As I hate too say this but as I read this on this forum and others. The drag racing guys have got alot of balls and very little brains to think a strip should be built first. SORT's been made up of mostly dirt track racers. I don't blame them one bit for going for a dirt track first.
If more land would be needed to make a full 1/4 mile strip anyway and they only have 40 arces to build on now (HRP was 67 arces or so) they should build a killer 3/8 mile oval instead of a small 1/4.
Think about it. How many drag racers stepped up and did anything?
I'll go dirt track racing for the time being. I may not be able to afford a sprinter. A Stock car could be a possibility. Everyone can afford a bomber.
I've got friends on both sides but I think I can learn to make a left turn or two.  :D

I'm sure that we'll stick with 1/4 mile for the dirt track because the cars that are here on Oahu are all setup for that. This is a private business operation, so income from a drag strip and road course will be a consideration in the plan. It's just that the logistics of building the different tracks comes into play, as far as completion time goes. Dirt tracks are easier and cheaper to build.
P.S. If the drag racers want a drag stip ASAP, then they should start rounding up volunteers with the skills to put the thing together. That's what it's gonna take.

FYI, a dirt track will be the first to be built, that is true.... However, the reason for that is not only that majority of the supporters of SORT are stock car racers, but for the pure simple fact that the materials that we need to build the track is DIRT, which is readily available and free. And a dirt oval track would be the easiest and quickest venue to get up and running. And that also includes a motorcross track.
The road course and drag strip will also be built there. Because the other venues will require asphalt/cement, we need to generate funding or sponsorship to get this phase moving. So, Les is right when he says that we need to round up volunteers with skills to come forward to help put this together.
Right now, we are in the planning stages and will have a SORT meeting in June or July to inform everyone about the track facilities. So, go ahead and bring out your cars and chase away the spider webs, cause WE WILL BE RACING SOOOOON!!!!!
