The day after Old Spice Funny Car driver Mike Neff toured the still-under-construction zMax Dragway in Concord , he gave racing fans at NASCAR's Lowe's Motor Speedway a taste of what they could expect from their new neighbor.
In front of a Coca-Cola 600 pre-race crowd of nearly 100,000, Neff laid down one of the most impressive burnouts in recent memory on pit road. Fans were on their feet when the Old Spice Ford Mustang was simply started, and after it made a quick warm-up hop, they were whipped into a frenzy of anticipation.
Neff backed up and positioned his 7,000-horsepower fuel coupe for the first full-powered NHRA burnout in the history of Lowe's Motor Speedway. When Neff hit the throttle, a massive cloud of smoke bellowed from his Mustang, and as he powered down pit road past many of the stars of NASCAR, the roar of the crowd was deafening.
“That was awesome," said Neff. "Making that burnout was incredible. I had to get off the throttle because I could feel my Old Spice Mustang starting to really pull. I think it was about to hook up on pit road. When I got to the end of pit road, there were people everywhere congratulating me on putting on such a great show.
“[Team owner John] Force really wanted to do the burnout, but he knew it was important for Old Spice to be the focus, and I really appreciate him giving me the chance to get in front of this many people to show off the power of the NHRA. Everyone has been great, and I know they are really looking forward to seeing us back here in September. Hopefully giving them a little taste of what they can see will help them sell some more tickets."
Neff's burnout was part of track president "Humpy" Wheeler's trademark epic opening ceremonies that included Apache helicopters, Howitzer cannons, paratroopers, and more music than most concerts.
