Show revs up public effort for raceway

A motorsports group needs government OKs for legal road racing at a site in Kalaeloa

By Kimberly Yuen

POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Jun 20, 2010

Motorsports enthusiasts gathered at Aloha Tower Marketplace yesterday to show off cars that are souped up but have no place to go.

The Oahu Motorsports Advisory Council hosted the fourth annual "Build The Track!" Motorsports Show to publicize the need for a racetrack in Oahu.

"We keep pushing as much as we can to get it done," said OMAC chairman Michael Kitchens.

His group owns 38 acres at Kalaeloa near Coral Sea Road and Tripoli Street. But the group is still trying to raise more than $1.5 million to build a track and still needs a green light from the city and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.

Kitchens is hopeful the group can get the necessary approvals by the end of the year and said donations are coming in.

"A new track would cut down on road racing a lot," said Travis Kaneakua, an exhibitor with Oahu Electric Cars Co.

"Without it, we're going to see more of the fatalities on the road," said Ewa Beach resident Russ LaPierre, who brought his restored 1941 Chevrolet Special Deluxe Coupe to the show.

Racing and "drifting" -- the sideways, in-and-out-of-control sliding of cars -- have long been problems on Oahu roads.

But the 200 motorsports enthusiasts who came to yesterday's show say a legal place to race and drift will reduce illegal racing.

"There's a lot of guys that have learned, after being on a track, to be responsible," Kitchens said. "Some of the new guys, they don't really have that peer guidance and the only place is on the street. That's not what you want to teach them."

City transportation officials recently announced plans to spend about $175,000 to install nonskid surfaces on the winding roads of Tantalus to discourage drifters from sliding their cars on the narrow, two-lane roadway.

But Kitchens believes drifters will still try to practice their sport on Tantalus, regardless of the road surface. Unless there's a controlled environment to practice drifting, he said, drivers would only "look upon it as a challenge."

"The guys that are really hard-core, they're going to do it," he said

Plans for the Kalaeloa Raceway Park call for a 1/4 -mile dirt oval track, 1/8-mile drag strip and multiple track layouts to support dirt, drag drift, go-kart, moto and road racing.

"Every year when I do this show, I always hope that next year there won't be a show, because if there's not a show, that means there's a racetrack," Kitchens said.

I thought they finally admitted they couldn't fit a drag strip on the property.

Hey mike, fuck it, lets tear down the fence, close the main road (for you) and build a full 1/4 mile drag strip w/1/8 mile shut down area! Come on mike, I know you can do it!

The same PLANs that DHHL told them they CANNOT build? The same one that Jr said out of his own mouth," We CANNOT build a dragstrip but we can FUNDRAISE to send the drag racers to the outer island?" Since when did Jr make Sink Boi the "Be all End all"?

GOD help us with the P24 and now the Sadnbox fiasco. SOS different dictator.

And you GULLIBLE dumb asses.

It has been four years since Hawaii Raceway Park in Kalaeloa was shut down. This facility was the only one on Oahu where car enthusiasts could legally race. Since the park's closing, there have been efforts to build a new race track on Oahu, but unfortunately, they have been met by some road blocks.

Michael Kitchens helped to organize this year's "Build the Track" motorsports show at Aloha Tower Marketplace held on Saturday.

"If you were to just walk around today and look at all the race cars, especially the ones behind me, you know, their sole mission is to you know, race on a track. And they don't have one to do that, but they're still here," he said.

Kitchens helped organize this Build the Track motorsports show at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

This event is dedicated to raising awareness for the support of a motorsports facility on Oahu.

"The racetrack should be built to keep the kids off the streets," said Steven Kehm.

Over the past four years, the former site of Hawaii Raceway Park changed hands several times.

This past March, a company called AG/CW Raceway Owner bought the 66-acre parcel for nearly $14 million. The company is affiliated with the investment firm Angelo Gordon and Company.

"I believe they're out of New York, but they purchased the property, the track, for the purposes of selling it and making it profit off the industrial space," said Kitchens.

Currently the group Save Oahu's Race Tracks and the Oahu Motorsports Advisory Council are trying to develop a multi-purpose motorsports facility known as Kalaeloa Raceway Park on a parcel of land that's about half the size of the former Hawaii Raceway Park site.

"Politics, there are the only things that really kind of hampered everything, but we're working our way through it," said Kitchens.

"Just like to say the sooner the lawmakers open up their eyes and realize how many people want a track, the sooner we'll actually get one," said Kehm.

The neighbor islands have places where car enthusiasts can legally race.
Kauai and Maui both have raceway parks, and the Big Island has the Hilo dragstrip.

so how does this fit in the big picture with the recent HCDA article? while we are here looking at the ins and outs, there's other people out there looking at the whole thing. which says what, exactly?

the one in the ummm what about p9 thread...

While there has been some piecemeal development at Kalaeloa over the years that has included industrial businesses and plans for a new FBI headquarters, former bases on the Mainland have blossomed with hotels, shopping centers, homes, offices, universities and parks.

HCDA plans are not binding. DHHL can designate their land however they want. Considering that Pasha is now paying $50,000/month for P9, it would be difficult for any would be track operator to match that payment. I believe your buddy was only paying $6,000/month for HRP. Is the extra 29 acres really worth an extra $44,000/month? Plus you have the time and cost in building a facility there. Plus you have a 750' setback from both runways.

Why anyone would think that place is ideal for a racetrack is puzzling to say the least.

if it is 50K.. that's stupid money for DHHL. i'd love to see that big fat check.. lol. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Pasha can't last forever like that and that place is not exactly beach front property, if ya know what i mean :D

even if the HCDA plans aren't binding... why implicate such a development in the first place?

just to clarify the runway part... check it out. i put a line that's 750ft..

http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt240/Udrive/kalealoa.jpg

the active runway (the other is a taxi way, obviously) has the required distance from the centerline to the edge of P9. then the slope starts. designing a track there wouldnt be that difficult. Oakland did it.. lol.

you can google and find a final that's 9mb and 234 pages long to see the process in building a runway. P9 is drawn like that because of the setbacks. they even colored it in crayon so people can see the boundry. the only thing is the lighting and the height requirement as per the slope. :D which is a valid concern, that i've also told you about the low level high tech lighting and what's wrong with a little angle in your architecture? its what's the rage nowdays anyway..

so... you can build a track there. lol

Those black skid marks mean 4L is a runway too. Try measuring 750' from 4L instead of 4R and see how much land you have left. Don't be like Gufi and design the project too close to the runway. Did your buddy work with Gufi on that design too? :D

If I were the airport authority, I wouldn't allow construction close to 4L because that runway might need to be used in the future. When I talked to the airport director about this back in 2006, he said that any construction design would have to be approved by the FAA, and they had a special form for it. And as far as he knew, no one had submitted the proper request. This is the same form that Gufi never filled out for his mall train. Now they have to move the train away from the airport. It's best to consider these things ahead of time.

Up there pretty late huh Davy. You stepping up your dosage? Your body trying to adjust to the meds? Just so long as it ain't

Hmmm, then again you keep bringing up P9 like a broken 8 track player or parrot
